Trend Alert: Creative Undercuts

The Undercut is a term used for the shaven areas of a hairstyle. Whether it is at the nape of the neck or on the sides, it can be a fun way to add dimension and an element of surprise to your everyday style.

We believe that with changing trends more people are willing to be adventurous with their precious locks, and while the undercut can be a bit daring at times, it can also be used as a tool to help lighten the load for thick haired people.
As for the creative stuff, we love making the regular undercut more exciting - adding shapes, layers and sometimes colour. If this tickles your fancy, our cutting experts at Stevie English will be able to come up with something unique for you and your style!

HAPPINESS

One of our core ideals at Stevie English Hair - Is to have as much fun as possible and to be happy.

It definitely is my goal, I love my job and I get to work with so many creative people. This year I’ve been across the Globe for Matrix educating and playing at colouring hair. And here in Australia I have spent my time educating, hanging in my salons with my cool staff and working on The Voice as Hair Ambassador for Matrix and we are only half-way through the year!

We believe that being happy is a great thing, and part of that feeling, is feeling good about yourself - and obviously we think a great hair can help.

I was reading an article the other day that was about the two things that go along with happiness; expectation and surprise. We like to think there’s some fun expectation of your booked appointment for Stevie English hair and the surprise - Well we don’t ever want to surprise any client. But we do like to help and assist with the look you want to achieve - I know our team (teamEnglish) have so much skill and creative genius that can help to add and suggest ways to make your look even more you!  So we hope that you have a style thats even better than you imagined - and thats always a happy surprise!

We like to think that when we are all happy we feel good about ourselves - so thats why this Saturday we would do something fun.  Just because ...

You’ll be able to snap your new snip from stevie english hair on snapchat whilst in the salon - and add our exclusive filter to your image - its just for the day - its a first for a Hairsalon and we hope you’ll have fun adding your happiness surprise and perhaps a little expectation to it as well!

Happy hair right there! Happy hairdressers too! So tomorrow in our salons play on snapchat and use our exclusive filter.

Balayage experts in Sydney

BALAYAGE

Meaning ‘to sweep’ in french, the balayage colouring technique has become one of the most popular salon services around the world. Originating in the 60s and 70s in Europe, it has made its way to popular culture through A List celebs and celebrity stylists.  It has been around for a while and it is no longer a 'trend'- it's a staple salon colour technique.

The balayage technique requires high skill, training and a lot of focus and expertise. Stevie travels around the globe and is in the middle of an Australian tour teaching other hairdressers how to balayage. All Stevie English colourists and colour technicians are proficient in the technique and do a similar style of balayage.   It looks well put together, no matter if your hair is straight, curly or tied up in a bun. It is the best low maintenance colour, requiring touch ups only every 6 - 10 weeks.

Although only recently made popular, the style itself is timeless and is reminiscent of classic, youthful beauty. Centred around the technique of painting highlights on to the hair in a free form, “sweeping” motion, the balayage effect should reveal a natural and sun-kissed, “your hair, but better” look. Of course you can make it with bright, bold colours too!

Customisable to your style, your aesthetic and your hair preferences

Every balayage is tailor-made and personalised for every client. No two heads are the same. As you would for make-up contouring, the soft highlights and/or lowlights are designed to accentuate certain areas. Different levels of lift can be used to visually manipulate the hair, making it look longer, shorter, thicker and/or multi dimensional. Have fun with it!

Balayage goes beyond just natural colours as well. More and more people are moving towards creative colours such as greys, purples, blues and pinks. Remember, trust the process and understand that not all colour goals are achieveable on the first attempt. Colour, especially colour correction and big changes, takes time. Look after your hair, use treatments and enjoy the results on healthy hair!

Effortlessly low maintenance yet sophisticated and on trend.

Curly Hair Expert in Sydney

Alex.  A Curly Hair Expert

Alex.  A Curly Hair Expert

Curly Hair Superstar -

I have been hairdressing for 23 years, and in my time there are a few people that stick out in my mind for having real skills with understanding and dealing with curly hair: so I would like to introduce one of my up and coming stars #Alex. Alex works in both of our salons - Tuesdays in Glebe and Wednesday through to Saturday in Bondi. He was an Art Director at the massive English salon chain Rush, and also a landscape gardener before working at Stevie English Hair.

Tell us a little bit about you -

I’m 33 years old from Sussex in England. My first taste of hairdressing was as an assistant in a hair designers in my local town- I was encouraged by a friend of my sisters who was popular, happy and always had money and this appealed to me. It was at Rush in London where I undertook my apprenticeship, working with some of the best hair stylists in the UK.

I worked my way up to Art Director, moved to Sydney in 2013, did a year on landscape gardening then started with Stevie English Hair. I'm one of the educators under Dave Edwards and I just LOVE HAIR.

When did you realise you wanted to specialise in curly hair/how did you get into cutting curls?

I have massive curly hair and I have had many people try to tame it over the years. I have watched amazing hairdressers torture curly hair. So I guess I really thought about my hair and what I like, and started applying those principles.  I think having curly hair myself gives clients confidence in me and I gradually started seeing more and more curly-haired clients and voila! I love giving people tools to understand their hair and I love making curls look their very best. Curls are sexy!

Whats the secret to curly hair ?

I’m not sure there is one because  everybody’s hair is different and every curl is different too. I was taught in London to cut curls wet. I very rarely do that these days. I treat every curl differently and I love working with peoples natural shape. I was a landscape gardener when I first arrived in Australia and I see some similarities between sculpting a tree and curly hair - its a real art! I do love to teach my clients about their curls, and I'm a big believer in loving your curls. The whole naughties with straightening scared me.  But with good education, a few must have products but only a few, I can tame any curly head.

What products do you recommend ?

I personally only use my Cleansing Conditioner from Matrix Biology. You pop it on once a week for about 10 mins and it cleans and conditions all in one - its amazing on my curly hair and my clients that I have recommended keep coming in to re-buy. To be honest that’s it really. Sometimes I use a Biolage defining gel-cream again from Matrix but thats it. I think most hairdressers use way to much product in curly hair and my nightmares are filled with straightened curly hair.

What your 3 biggest tips for people with curly hair?

My 3 biggest tips for curly hair are:

1. Only put in curl products in when the hair is soaking wet.

2. Air dry your curls

3. Avoid razoring curly hair.

OLAPLEX THE GAME CHANGER

Here at Stevie English Hair, we were lucky enough to be asked to be ambassadors of a revolutionary new product called Olaplex. Lucky because we got a chance to play with the product before it is officially available in Australia, and it comes with some pretty big promises: that you can lighten your hair without damage, or in fact improve the condition of the hair.

WHAT THE ??!!!!!

As a professional hair colourist of 20+ years, I have never heard of a product that could deliver on that kind of promise, so naturally I was well keen to get my hands on it. Olaplex is a 3-step system that consists of Bond Multiplier, Bond Perfecter and a take home Hair Perfector. The basic premise is that the product multiplies the bonds that are broken by lifting or depositing colour on the hair, thus preventing breakage and other damage. The first product can be added to any colour, powder lightener or perm solution, the second step is applied after rinsing & the third used at home.

Powder Lightener/bleach  has always been my best friend and my worse enemy. You can do amazing things with it, but it damages hair! So when a product claims to turn your colour world upside down, you can imagine me being extremely nervous the first time I used Olaplex!  But also so excited!  I was lightening one of my stylist’s hair- she had previously had lots of breakage and her ends were pretty well fried. Her hair was a patchwork quilt. And this would normally be put in the too hard basket unless you want an inch blonde crop.

After reading the directions seven times, I mixed up powder lightener, bumped up the developer level (ARGHHHH), added the Olaplex and went in. I did strand tests every 5 minutes, and basically hovered behind the chair the entire time the colour was on her hair (sweating). At the basin- no breakage! After the second step was applied, the hair felt even better, it turned to silk. I could not believe her ends survived- I would never have tried to lighten them without the Olpalex’s promise.

Since that first colour, I have used Olaplex pretty much every day - my team have also been blown away by the results they can achieve without damaging the hair. The product completely delivers on its promise and I don’t know any colourist who would not be excited about a product that can do this.  There is an extra fee but its so worth it! Never have i been able to guarantee hair in this way.

Game changer? Definitely!
